The Howarth Gurdjieff Archive (1910-2010) contains notes and writings collected by Dushka and Jessmin Howarth. The archive is meant to preserve the integrity of Gurdjieff’s teachings and Movements. In addition, the archive holds Dushka and Jessmin Howarth’s family papers and research for their book, It’s Up To Ourselves: A Mother, A Daughter, and G.I. Gurdjieff, A Shared Memoir and Family Photo Album. The archive exists in two forms:
New York Public Library (NYPL)
The original hard-copy material that composes the Howarth Gurdjieff Archive currently resides at the New York Public Library and is arranged into four series:
1. Movements material compiled with the intent of organizing and preserving the integrity of the Gurdjieff Movements.
2. The Jessmin and Dushka Howarth papers including correspondence, scrapbooks, Gurdjieff memorabilia, photographs, and other materials belonging to and collected by Jessmin and Dushka.
3. The Research papers of Dushka Howarth consisting of printouts and photocopies of articles with annotations which she used when writing her book It’s Up To Ourselves.
4. Writings and publications consisting of copies of articles, typescripts, and pamphlets collected by Dushka and Jessmin Howarth including memoirs from former Gurdjieff followers such as Olga de Hartmann and Joyce Collin-Smith, as well as the thoughts of contemporary writers on the Gurdjieff methods and various film and theatre scripts about Gurdjieff’s life.
A Digitized Online Archive
Most of the hard-copy material at the NYPL referenced above has been digitized and resides in the GHS archives. This archive includes Jessmin’s and Dushka’s choreographed Movements notes and notated Movements music, photos, audio tape recordings, and many documents about the history of the Gurdjieff Work. The parts of the archive that contains the Movements related material is only available by invitation to authorized Movements Instructors and Musicians as directed by Dushka Howarth.
